Why It’s Important to Have a Cozy Home
In this day and age, the world is more crowded than ever and it became even harder to have space for oneself and think clearly.
This makes one’s home, for a lot of people, their only escape from the outside world and the only place they are able to think clearly and have a little time for themselves.
Not only that, but there has been a number of studies and research that proved that having a cozy home helps with one’s mental illness and can even improve your quality of life.
In a number of cases, some people have had their lives completely changed once they changed their home’s décor. Being in a cozy home feels more inviting to you and everyone who you have over, and will calm you much faster than any other type of home décor.
Being in a cozy home has a list of other benefits on both your lifestyle and your mental health! Let us check them out!
You Leave Work at Work
Nowadays, most office jobs will have you sitting down pinned to your office and chair for over 7 hours every day, having another office at home isn’t the best thing to go for if you really care about your mental health and overall well-being.
This is why this type of décor aims at leaving work at work. When you’re home you are supposed to relax, rest, and spend quality time with your friends and family, or even by yourself if that’s what you like doing.
The moment you are back at your cozy home you will forget about everything that happened outside and will instead focus on yourself.
We all know that a lot of people do idealize those who work hard and more than everyone else, promoting the entrepreneur hustler lifestyle.
But that’s not normal, that’s not what our lives should be like. As much as you work and take into new endeavors, you should also spend just as much time working on yourself and making sure you are in good shape both physically and mentally.
Taking the necessary rest time your body and mind need will render very useful in both the short term and long run.
Not only should you leave work at work, but your home should also be a place where you get rid of most if not all tech-related products that are sure to consume a large portion of your time on a daily basis.
We all know how tech can connect us with one another but also separate those who live in the same home. Yes, sometimes tech products are used in a way that is entertaining and one that makes us feel better, that is okay, but abusing it is going to have serious damage to our health and relationship with our friends and family.
Leaving work at work does not just mean not working at home, but it’s not answering unurgent emails, text messages, or calls outside of office hours. Depending on your type of job, you may not be required to be reachable outside office hours, and if you’re still being reached out to, it is totally up to you to refuse to answer and you have the right to ask not to be reached again!
Another thing you may want to do at home in order to make it cozier is picking a day where you go completely free of all tech and tech-related products.
If you can’t completely do that then you may want to opt for some specific apps that help you stay away from apps that won’t do you any good and set up a time limit on them.
Such apps don’t require to be installed since they come by default in most operating systems and will help you spend less time on any app of your choosing.
You Stay Organized
When it comes to the Cozy home design path, it is quite similar to minimalism in a lot of ways. It focuses on only using and decorating your home with the most important materials and pieces of furniture.
When you buy everything you see and like despite having a need for it, it will quickly transform into a liability and you will need to look for a place to store it, ruining the whole purpose of decorating your home as you will no longer feel the same cozy, inviting feeling you once had.
If your bedroom happens to have a lot of extra furniture and boxes of something you bought in 2007, then you are sure not going to be as comfy and relaxed as you intended to be.
A cluttered home translates into a cluttered mind. Although it is energy and time consuming to always keep everything clean, organized, and spot-on, it can have a lot of positive effects on your life and that is not something you would want to miss out on.
You Soften Things Up
When you opt-in for cozy home design, you of course are supposed to follow a list of guidelines in order to achieve the best result.
One of those guidelines is that, unlike minimalism, you should get rid of everything that is edgy and rough-looking. The place should look warm, not cold, and that is a feeling that you are certainly going to get from sharp edges.
Since the place is going to be filled with comfortable, warm, and relaxing pieces of furniture, that too is going to have a good effect on you.
Another thing that will drastically improve your overall vibe and feeling is the lighting, as when you’re in a cozy home, it is purposefully decorated and illuminated with warm, dim lighting that gives you the feeling of comfort and coziness while you’re at home.
Unlike summer, being in a cozy home is ever more useful during winter since that’s where we spend most of our time. And if you’re going to be spending most of your time somewhere
it had better be a place that makes you feel comfortable and gives you the right atmosphere where you can celebrate and enjoy the company you get from your family and friends.
So, you’re more than ever interested in this design path and would like to turn your place into a safe, cozy haven? Read along as the following steps are exactly what you need to do in order to achieve your goal!
How to Warm Your Place Up Using Lights
First, you’re going to need to turn your place into a warm one. And how do you do that? Lighting.
Lighting is the base of every home’s décor, that’s why you will often find it mentioned first in every decoration tutorial, as well as being the first thing any great architect will think about.
Another reason why lighting is the first thing you should think about is the fact you should set it up before you do anything else, including the paint job and furnishing your house.
In order to end up with great lighting in your room, you need to make sure these questions are answered:
- Which light sources are available to you?
- Does sunlight hit the room?
- Are you using warm or cool lightbulbs?
- Do you like the design of the lights in your place?
After you’ve got those answered, it becomes clear that there are a few things here and there that should totally be avoided, including single overhead lightbulbs that give off a harsh light.
You can replace those with a few dimmer, softer, warmer light spread out across the room.
You can mount them on the wall, the ceiling, and even the floor. And you don’t have to stick to using lightbulbs, instead, you can use candles, and if you go with this idea, make sure those candles are scented.
so they’d give off a good scent across the place as well as put everything in the right atmosphere and create a cozy, warm, and welcoming ambiance!
Depending on whether or not sunlight reaches the room, you can make quite the use of it. During the day, you can totally eliminate using any other light sources and instead focus on how the sunlight will hit the floor and illuminate the whole space.
You can work on the shades and window blinds and create something beautiful out of them.
The blinds can be used and set up in a way that allows them to soften the light coming in from outside, as well as they can be used to separate light and give it a cool shape when it touches the surface.
There are tons of ideas that you can go for, and as long as they make the place feel cozy, they are definitely good ones.
Now when it comes to lightbulbs, you’re going to need to get yourself something that isn’t on the cooler side, but not something that is too warm to the point where you can’t enjoy seeing anything in it.
There is a fine line between those and the warm lighting you want your place to have.
As the picture below signifies, there are different degrees of “coolness” and “warmth” that you can go for depending on which kind of lightbulb you buy.
The coolest lightbulbs are those between 5,000K and 10,000K. While warmer ones can range from anything between 4,000k and 1,000.
The lower the number you go for (in kelvin), the warmer the lightbulb is going to be. But this is what we warned you of earlier, don’t fall into the trap of getting the warmest lightbulb money can buy, that’s not our point or goal here.
You should pick a lightbulb that is just warm enough that it gives that specific warm, cozy feeling that we’re all looking for.
If I were you, I’d go for something between 2,000k and 4,000 as 1,000k lightbulbs are just too warm for me and do not give me the feeling that I am looking for.
Now that we’re done talking about warm light, let’s talk about cold one.
We don’t have much to say about cold lightbulbs, other than to throw them in the garbage bin. That’s it, throw them away, now!
They’re only useful if you’re at the Apple Store, and you don’t live in the Apple Store!
Another cool idea that you may or may not have tried before is using string lights.
String lights are very dim yet warm light sources that give a good feeling to the entire room, as well as being a good décor.
These lights will work best in the living room, the bedroom, the kitchen… You got the idea, they work EVERYWHERE! Use them where you want irresponsibly, you can’t go wrong with them!
Bring Nature to Your Home
The second part about making your home cozy and welcoming is going to be the use of plants and natural resources. You can’t make a place feel homey, cozy, and welcoming without the use of plants, it’s just not going to work as best as it could.
We know that cozy houses are known for having only the necessities and aren’t cramped with useless stuff and decoration items, but this definitely does not apply to plants.
The reason why plants are cozy is because they are alive as well. You may not have known this, but plants aren’t static.
They move around all day long, just at an extremely slow speed. Watching plants during the whole day will give off a wonderful feeling, especially when you noticed that they have changed their position.
Another concern with brining live plants home is that you should keep them alive.
This doesn’t require too much work, but a lot of people tend to neglect them and as a result, the plants die. All they require is that you water and fertilize them on a basis that works for the type of plant you have.
Another thing you need to watch out for is not to put them in the bedroom, and if you do, make sure you take them out.
Plants are well-known for being an excellent oxygen source, but they also consume it at night and emit carbon dioxide, which is a toxic gas that you do not want to be near.
Keep the plants in an open area at night so that they can use the oxygen coming in from outside, as well as not fill the room with the toxic carbon dioxide.
When we say plants, we don’t just mean big plants that fit in large vases.
You can also get a few live flowers and spread them across the house. They will definitely warm up the whole place and give a beautiful look, as well as their beautiful scent.
Use of Rugs & Warm Textile
Rugs in general are very cozy, unlike tiles and synthetic flooring.
The only downside to them is that they can get quite chilly during the winter unless you use a few extra layers between them and the floor, which is something we would highly recommend.
We know that big rugs can be quite expensive, but you can buy ones that come in pieces. You don’t have to cover the whole area of the room, and you can buy different designs for each room or space.
Rugs can be used everywhere in the house, including the kitchen and bathroom as the picture below clearly shows.
Rugs can be put under the dinner table, under the bed and surrounding, and anywhere where the flooring doesn’t seem to give off the cozy feeling that you want.
Don’t forget that rugs come in a lot of different shapes and designs, you need to make sure the color of the rugs isn’t too cold and isn’t too shiny either.
Some rugs can even come with some beautiful designs sewed into them, which turns them into beautiful pieces of art that you not can not only use but enjoy looking at as well.
Yes, unnecessary pieces of décor should be avoided and you shouldn’t clutter your home. But you also can’t have a house that has absolutely no piece of art.
The walls should have at least something on them. A piece or 2 of beautiful paintings are more than enough to brighten up any room.
More than that, you should make sure that the art pieces match the rest of the room, you can do this by picking a certain color scheme for a room and sticking to it
If anything, you should avoid having an empty wall at all costs. If not using an art piece, then you should hang a mirror, a light source, a window… anything but to have an empty wall.
The only case where you can get away with empty walls is if it’s the wall above your bed; that one kind of looks better that way.
Focus on Smell
This is the last part of this long list, but it doesn’t mean it is any less important than everything else.
The look, as well as the smell of the house you want to feel homey in, are important, and you should focus on both of them.
We mentioned this earlier, but scented candles are a great source of both light and scent. There are a ton of other sources of scent that you can go for, so let’s us check them out.
But before we get into that, there is one thing that you should be aware of.
If you want your home to always smell good without using any additional sources of scent is to leave everything open during the door.
This includes all windows and backyard door. By doing that you allow fresh air to come in and out of the house freely, replacing the air and smell inside the house with the fresh air.
These sources of scent that you can use in your home are all-natural, which means there is no need to worry about chemicals or anything that lay hurt you or your family!
- Essential oils
- Scented Cleaning Vinegar
- Fabric Spray
- Garbage Disposal Cubes
- Deodorizing Carpet Powder
- Wax Melts
- Car Air Freshener
- Gel Air Fresheners
- Air Purifying Plants
- Stovetop Potpourri
Each of these sources can be used differently and each of them has its ups and downs.
Depending on the type of scent and type of house you have, as well as the kind of furniture you’ve got, you may want to choose differently.
Either way, you shouldn’t need to use all of these sources and 1 or a couple of them should be more than enough to turn your home into a good smelling, cozy have.
We hope that this article has shown you everything you needed to know about how to turn your home into a cozy one where you can relax and enjoy your time off with your relatives, friends, and close ones.
We also wish you the best in decorating your home and hope it turns out the way you’ve always imagined it!
